Unprecedented attack on Cyprus - the country holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union - by Iran's Muslim regime

3.3.2026

Priority question for written answer P-000872/2026
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 144
Afroditi Latinopoulou (PfE)

The indiscriminate use of force by Iran's theocratic regime has crossed the EU's borders, striking an air base in Cyprus, violating Cypriot airspace and endangering the lives of thousands of Greek Cypriots. Threats have also been made against Greece.

Given the above, can the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy say:

  • 1.Why has she not yet activated the mutual defence clause (Article 42(7)) to protect Cyprus?
  • 2.What additional measures does she intend to take to protect the airspace over the EU's borders in the future?
  • 3.What action is she planning to take as a sign of unity and strength on the part of the EU as a whole in the face of an unprecedented attack on its territory at a time when its members are under threat?
