George Strait mourned the loss of a rodeo legend.
Strait, 74, remembered Phil Lyne as "a true cowboy," in his tribute. Lyne died on Friday (August 14). He was 79. The San Antonio, Texas-born rodeo champion was born on January 18, 1947. Lyne is often hailed the "Greatest Cowboy of All Time," per a report by Sports Illustrated over the weekend. The report notes that Lyne kicked off his professional career in 1969, scoring a Rookie title, and going on to become a five-time world champion. Lyne is a member of the National Rodeo Hall of Fame and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. He was inducted into both Halls of Fame in the 1970s.
Strait, who was born in Poteet, Texas, shared in a statement on his social media accounts on Sunday (August 16): "Phil Lyne, we'll never forget you. All of our prayers are with you and your family. May God bless them. You left your mark on South Texas and of course all of the rodeo world. A true cowboy in every sense of the word. I'm proud that I got to call you my friend. I'll see you down the road someday amigo."
