The start of a new school year is an exciting time for students and families across North Port. New teachers, new classrooms, new friendships and new opportunities all lie ahead.

But behind every successful school year is a community working together to support students and their families. From helping provide essential school supplies to connecting families with local resources and keeping children safe on their journey to, in and from school, organizations throughout North Port play an important role in helping students start the year ready to learn.

Here are three ways our community helps students prepare for a successful school year.

Supply Squad: Supporting Students Who Need It Most

For some families, preparing for a new school year can be financially challenging. Between backpacks, school supplies, clothing, shoes and other necessities, costs can quickly add up.

That's why the City's Social Services Division created the Supply Squad Program (formerly the Back-to-School Resource Fair)

Designed to support students identified by local schools as having the greatest need, the program helps remove barriers to school readiness by providing essential school supplies, clothing, footwear and hygiene items. Participating students are referred by school staff, counselors, school liaisons, or administrators who understand the unique challenges some families may be facing.

However, Supply Squad is about more than just supplies. Parents and guardians are required to participate in a workshop highlighting available community resources and support services, prior to a one-day shopping event. By combining the school shopping experience with parent education and connections to community resources, Supply Squad helps students begin the school year with confidence while empowering families with support that extends beyond the first day of school.

This year, the program will serve students from schools throughout North Port, helping ensure that every nominated child has the opportunity to start the year feeling prepared, included and ready to succeed.

Community Spotlight: Back Pack Angels

While programs like Supply Squad help students prepare for the school year, many local organizations are also working quietly behind the scenes to support children facing significant challenges.

One such organization is Back Pack Angels, a North Port-based nonprofit founded by a group of local grandparents, mothers and teachers who saw a growing need among students experiencing homelessness and financial hardship. Working closely with school counselors, social workers, nurses and teachers, the organization provides backpacks and family bags filled with essential hygiene items to students who might otherwise go without.

For many students, access to everyday necessities such as toothpaste, shampoo, soap and deodorant can have a significant impact on their confidence, self-esteem and ability to participate fully in school. By helping meet these basic needs, Back Pack Angels supports some of our community's most vulnerable children and helps remove barriers that can affect attendance, learning and social connection.

Over the years, the organization has distributed thousands of backpacks and hygiene kits to North Port students and families. Their work serves as a powerful reminder that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference in a child's life.

Community Resources for Every Family

In addition to programs designed to support students with the greatest needs, community organizations throughout North Port continue to provide valuable resources for families preparing for the school year.

One example is the annual Back-to-School Resource Fair hosted by Awaken Church. The event brings together local organizations, service providers and community partners to connect families with information, support services and supplemental school supplies.

Events like these highlight the power of community partnerships and provide opportunities for families to learn about resources available year-round. Whether a family is looking for educational support, community programs or simply a helping hand as the school year begins, resource fairs can serve as an important connection point.

School Zone Safety Starts With All of Us

As students return to classrooms, North Port roadways become busier during morning and afternoon hours. School buses return to regular routes, crossing guards resume their duties and thousands of students begin walking, biking or traveling to school each day.

The North Port Police Department's School Zone Safety Program helps improve safety around local schools through education, awareness and enforcement. School zone speed limits, flashing beacons and traffic controls are all designed to protect students during some of the busiest times of the day.

Drivers play an important role in keeping students safe. Slowing down in school zones, remaining alert for children crossing roadways and obeying school bus stop requirements can help prevent accidents and ensure students arrive safely at school and home each day.

As a reminder, school zone cameras will be active in designated school zones throughout North Port and help support compliance with posted speed limits. Their purpose is simple: to encourage safer driving behaviors in areas where children are present.

More Than a Badge: Meet Your School Resource Officers

For many students, one of the most familiar faces on campus isn't a teacher or administrator, it's their School Resource Officer.

School Resource Officers, commonly known as SROs, are sworn North Port Police or Sarasota County Schools police officers assigned to local schools. While they play an important role in maintaining campus safety, their responsibilities extend far beyond emergency response and law enforcement.

Throughout the school year, SROs build relationships with students, support school staff, participate in educational programs and serve as mentors and trusted adults on campus. By getting to know students and becoming part of the school community, they help create an environment where young people feel safe, supported and comfortable seeking help when needed.

Whether greeting students in the morning, attending school events, assisting with safety planning or simply taking time to listen, School Resource Officers help strengthen the connection between our schools, our families and the North Port Police Department. Their presence serves as a reminder that keeping students safe is a community effort, and one that continues long after the first school bell rings.

A Community Investment

Preparing students for success requires more than backpacks and notebooks. It takes educators, parents, volunteers, community organizations, local government and neighbors all working toward a common goal.

Whether it's providing school supplies, connecting families with resources or helping create safer schools, every effort contributes to a stronger community and a brighter future for North Port's students.
