Solar Myths Debunked

Picture a sunny Oregon day: rooftops covered in sleek solar panels, quietly soaking up the sunshine and turning it into energy. Sounds somewhat futuristic, right? Yet solar power is already here - and it's becoming an increasingly important part of our renewable energy future. Still, despite its growing popularity, solar power is surrounded by plenty of myths and misconceptions.

Hi, I'm Reann Smith and this summer, I've had the opportunity to intern with Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) through the Script internship, where I've learned more than I could have imagined about environmental advocacy, climate policy, and the misinformation surrounding clean energy. I chose to intern with OEC because I wanted to spend my summer doing meaningful work that connected my interests with real environmental action. Throughout these past two and a half months, I've become increasingly interested in the myths surrounding solar power and why they persist. Whether they come from outdated information, misunderstandings, or simply something we've heard repeated enough times, these misconceptions can make it harder to see the potential of solar energy.

I'm more than delighted to have spent these months doing work I'm passionate about. OEC has given me the chance to learn from people dedicated to building a healthier, more sustainable Oregon, while contributing to work that can make a real difference. So, before we let these myths cast a shadow over solar's potential, let's shine some light on the facts - and bust a few of the most common myths about solar power.

Myth #1: Solar panels are expensive

Fact: Many people think solar panels are too expensive, but the cost of solar has dropped significantly over the years, and today it is often cheaper to build new solar projects than new fossil fuel power plants. While there is an upfront cost, financing options and incentive programs can help, and most homeowners earn back their investment within 6-10 years through lower energy bills. Solar panels also require very little maintenance and typically last 25-30 years or more, making them a long-term investment. The installation process is handled by solar companies from start to finish, making it much easier than many people expect

Myth #2: Solar power is harmful to the environment and wildlife

Fact: Most modern solar projects are built on already-developed land or farmland that landowners choose to lease, helping limit impacts on natural habitats. While solar farms can affect wildlife, they cause far fewer bird deaths than fossil fuel power plants and also produce clean energy that reduces carbon emissions. Today's solar panels are made with safer materials, do not produce harmful levels of radiation or toxic runoff, and many solar sites are managed in ways that support agriculture and pollinators, such as grazing sheep and planting pollinator-friendly vegetation. When planned and managed responsibly, solar projects can provide clean energy while minimizing environmental impacts.

Myth #3: Solar panels only work on sunny days

Fact: Solar panels can still generate electricity on cloudy, rainy, and even snowy days by using both direct and indirect sunlight. While they produce the most energy in full sun, solar panels can also perform well in cooler temperatures as long as they are clear of debris or snow. They don't generate electricity at night, but battery storage systems can store extra energy for use after the sun goes down. Even if your roof doesn't face south, east- and west-facing roofs can still produce plenty of solar energy throughout the day.

Myth #4: Solar panels aren't recyclable

Fact: More than 95% of a solar panel can be recycled at the end of its lifespan. Since most panels last 25-30 years or longer, they don't need to be replaced often, and specialized recycling facilities are available to recover valuable materials like glass, aluminum, copper, and silver. Recycling processes and panel manufacturing have continued to improve, helping reduce environmental impacts and waste. As the solar industry grows, recycling programs are making it easier to reuse these materials and support a more sustainable energy future. Myth #5: Solar power is unreliable

Fact: Solar power is actually one of the most predictable sources of electricity because sunrise and sunset can be accurately forecast each day. Solar panels are built to withstand harsh weather, including strong winds, hail, and freezing temperatures, and they often experience fewer unexpected outages than many other energy sources. They also help reduce strain on the electric grid by generating power close to where it's used, and battery storage can provide backup power during outages or natural disasters. Even rainy weather can help keep solar panels working efficiently by washing away dust and dirt.

Oregon shows resiliency during, after solar eclipse

Overall, Monday's solar eclipse lived up to the wonderful hype and not much of the fears. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flocked to Oregon to join millions of residents and bask in the glow of a beautiful August day. Many, including myself, stared up in awe, smiling from the memorable experience. It's a historic measure that transitions our state's electricity grid off of coal-fired power, replacing that power with clean, renewable energy.
