On October 17, 2025, the handover and official opening ceremony of the China-aid Tonga Peripheral Area of Mala'ekula Royal Tombs Improvement Project was successfully held at the project site. The ceremony was attended by approximately 150 participants, including His Majesty King Tupou VI, Her Majesty Queen Nanasipauʻu, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for His Majesty's Armed Forces His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala, Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tukuʻaho, Her Royal Highness Princess Pilolevu Tuita, Lord Tuita, Acting Prime Minister as well as Minister for Infrastructure Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, and representatives from the project contractor.
Ambassador Liu Weimin said that China-Tonga relations have been strengthened by fruitful cooperation and enduring friendship since the establishment of diplomatic ties. This project, undertaken by China in response to the trust of the Tongan Royal Family, represents a significant contribution to the preservation of Tonga's cultural heritage. It also stands as a congratulatory gift for both the 150th anniversary of the Constitution of Tonga and the 27th anniversary of China-Tonga diplomatic relations. China is ready to work with Tonga to elevate bilateral relations to a new height.
Dr. Fusimalohi said that the project not only demonstrates deep respect for the traditions of the Royal Family but also provides the public with enhanced recreational space, which will be a new cultural landmark in Nuku'alofa. It stands as another testament to the enduring partnership between Tonga and China.
Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala delivered a vote of thanks.
His Majesty King Tupou VI then officiated the ribbon-cutting and took commemorative photos with the Chinese representatives.
