As Gas Tops $4, Costs Climb, And American Troops Remain In Harm's Way, Republicans Refuse To Check Trump's Unilateral War-Again
Washington, D.C. - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke on the Senate floor ahead of a vote on Democrat's fourth attempt to pass an Iran War Powers Resolution, urging his Republican colleagues to join Senate Democrats to rein in Trump's War of Choice in Iran.
On February 28, 2026, President Trump chose to wage war and escalate military actions in Iran without Congressional approval, transparency, or support from the American people. For the fourth time in just 47 days, Senate Republicans chose loyalty to Donald Trump over their constitutional duty-and over the American people-voting to block a War Powers Resolution to end Trump's reckless war of choice in Iran.
That's why, this week, Senate Democrats launched a push that will force Senate Republicans to face War Powers votes week after week until Republicans start doing their jobs and stand up for our troops, American families, and the constitution.
This war was never authorized by Congress. The American people never asked for it. And nearly seven weeks in, they're still being kept in the dark. No clear mission. No defined endgame. No accountability. Just rising costs, growing risks, and American troops caught in the middle.
Meanwhile, the consequences at home are mounting: gas prices are soaring past $4 a gallon, inflation is ticking back up; mortgage rates are rising again. Schumer says American families are paying the price for a war they didn't choose-while Senate Republicans refuse to lift a finger to stop it. And on the front lines, American servicemembers are being asked to risk their lives without a clear objective, without transparency, and without the backing of Congress. That's not strength or leadership. That's a failure of responsibility.
Schumer vows: Senate Democrats will keep forcing these votes-every single week-until Republicans stop hiding, stop folding, and start doing their jobs.
FOUR TIMES: Republicans have blocked War Powers Resolutions on Iran.
Below is a transcript of Leader Schumer's remarks from the floor, which can also be viewed here:
First, I want to thank my colleagues, my colleague from Illinois who has done such a good job and knows all about what our veterans go through in the horrors of war. My colleague, Tim Kaine, who has been so involved in this issue of War Powers Resolutions for a decade. And so many others of us who are introducing resolutions on this issue.
Republicans have voted against this resolution three times now, but as the war drags on for 47 days with no end in sight, they should join us today on this resolution and end the war once and for all.
With gas costing over $4 a gallon, inflation climbing, and mortgage rates going up, the American people literally cannot afford for Republicans to forgo another opportunity to work with Democrats to end Trump's disastrous war at long last.
Congress cannot simply sit on the sidelines while our brave servicemembers are risking their lives on the front lines.
The stakes are too high, the risks are too great for Republicans to stay silent.
I urge my Republican colleagues to listen to the majority of Americans who are calling for an end to Trump's wanton war of choice. We still don't know the goals, we still don't know the costs, we still don't know the length of time. So many unanswered questions on the most important issue that this Senate can face, which is whether to go to war, and then total silence from the other side. Not a single hearing, not a single discussion on this. Well, I'm going to tell my Republican colleagues, they're not going to be able to escape continuing to vote on this.
Until our Republican colleagues join us, we will continue forcing a vote on our War Powers Resolution week after week after week.
This is an American issue, not a partisan one. This is one of the worst forays America has ever made, with so much damage that's going to be lasting. And so, I urge my colleagues to do what they know is the right thing and join us in voting for Senator Duckworth's resolution.
