In 2024, UNESCO, with the support of the Khalili Foundation and under the patronage of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Sir David Khalili, launched a project to democratize access to knowledge of the world's documentary heritage . By making metadata on MoW inscriptions available through Wikimedia platforms, the project advances UNESCO's mission of open access, while enhancing both the visibility and usability of the Register. The enriched dataset transforms the Register into a dynamic resource that anyone can consult, reuse, and build upon, promoting innovation, collaboration and new research in documentary heritage for education, peacebuilding, and intercultural understanding.
Welcoming this announcement, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr Tawfik Jelassi, described the partnership as a major milestone in efforts to elevate documentary heritage as a significant information and knowledge resource.
