The Euro is not just a currency but a strategic choice that strengthens Bulgaria's position in the heart of a united and strong Europe. For us this means full participation in the European economic cooperation, a higher level of trust in investment, lower costs for businesses and citizens, a higher degree of financial stability and protection against external shocks, faster economic development and stronger competitiveness. Bulgaria is fully prepared for the smooth transition to the single European currency and the cabinet consistently meets its commitments to that effect. With these words, Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov opened the high-level conference on "Bulgaria on the Doorstep of the Eurozone".
Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov pointed out that for Bulgaria incorporation into the Eurozone is not limited to accession alone. The Prime Minister emphasized that the common European home provides security but requires care and effort to achieve prosperity. "I want to state most responsibly that Bulgaria will contribute to these joint efforts," he said. The Prime Minister expressed his confidence that on 1 January 2026 Bulgaria will welcome the single currency as a sign of the maturity of its European democracy. "The Euro is not an end in itself; the Euro is a great responsibility and an instrument to achieve goals that will last over time, to improve stability and prosperity of each member state and of the Eurozone as a whole," Rossen Jeliazkov noted.
The Prime Minister pointed out that Bulgaria is prepared in all aspects for the Euro - the legislation, logistics, adjustment of the information payment systems, tools for consumer protection and consumer awareness. Rossen Jeliazkov stressed in particular the Bulgarian citizens' confidence. He recalled that it had been undermined over the years by anti-European political players who are to be found in every member state. "In Bulgaria they have made some of the society at large hostile to the Euro as they used untrue suggestions, disseminated misleading information and even inspired fears. Nonetheless, the majority of Bulgarians continue to choose the European path, as their hearts prompt them. I am convinced that the hesitations of Bulgarians regarding the Euro will disappear very soon," Rossen Jeliazkov said further. The Prime Minister stressed the role of the public awareness campaign about the Euro as it contributes to the steady rise in the confidence in the process.
Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov recalled the consistent work of generations of Bulgarian politicians in favor of the country's European path and the contribution of business and civil society to that effect. The reforms that have been carried out in the years since Bulgaria's accession to the European Union to date and the integration process are what make the country a better place to live and to do business in. Rossen Jeliazkov specially thanked European partners for their support for Bulgaria. "Together we show that when we have a common cause and mutual willingness, Bulgaria can score major success within a united Europe," said Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov.
