First female Mount Sinai cardiologist to hold this prestigious position

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has named Roxana Mehran, MD, FACC, FACP, FCCP, FESC, FAHA, MSCAI, as its new President. She was appointed on Monday, March 30, during the convocation ceremony at the ACC Congress 2026 in New Orleans. Dr. Mehran is the first female cardiologist from Mount Sinai to hold this distinguished position; the last Mount Sinai cardiologist to lead the ACC was Simon Dack, MD, in 1956.

Dr. Mehran is Director of the Women's Heart and Vascular Center at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital and Director of the Center for Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials, as well as the Mount Sinai Professor in Cardiovascular Clinical Research and Outcomes at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

As the 74thth President of ACC, Dr. Mehran will serve as the organization's chief leader, spokesperson, and chair of the Board of Trustees for a one-year term, focusing on strategic vision, governance, and global advocacy for cardiovascular health, mentoring future leaders, driving digital transformation, and addressing health disparities while also representing the ACC internationally.

The ACC is a professional home for cardiovascular clinicians seeking the latest science, research, and cutting-edge education in this field of medicine. It is a global leader in the field, uniting nearly 60,000 members spanning the entire cardiovascular care team around the shared mission of transforming care and improving heart health for everyone.

Dr. Mehran is an internationally renowned interventional cardiologist and clinical researcher. She is globally respected for her work focused on designing and implementing randomized clinical trials and outcomes research projects and publishing the results in high-impact academic publications. She has served as Principal Investigator for numerous global studies and developed important practice guidelines for treating patients with cardiovascular disease. She has focused on personalized medicine and developed individual risk scores for bleeding and acute kidney injury, participates regularly in developing clinical guidelines, and has authored more than 2,000 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Mehran is a founder and previously held the position of Chief Scientific Officer of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF). She also leads the Lancet Commission on Women's Cardiovascular Diseases, which has brought together leading researchers from around the world to identify and bridge gaps in scientific discovery, clinical trials, and care for women with cardiovascular disease. She was recently named Director of the Women's Heart and Vascular Center at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital, spearheading a program that represents a collaboration across multiple disciplines designed to meet the specific needs of women's cardiovascular health. In 2019, she founded Women as One, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing opportunities for women in medicine, where she serves as Chair of the Board.

Dr. Mehran has received some of the most prestigious honors in the field of cardiology that recognize her lifetime achievements in patient care and cardiology education. In 2025, the American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology selected Dr. Mehran as the recipient of its 2025 Laennec Master Clinician Award. She was also recognized with the Master of Masters Award at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Asia Pacific, and the European Society of Cardiology Gold Medal Award. Other past awards include the 2016 ACC Bernadine Healy Leadership in Cardiovascular Disease Award, the 2018 Nanette Wenger Award from WomenHeart for excellence in research and education, the 2019 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the 2019 European Society of Cardiology Silver Medal and Andreas Grüntzig Lecture Plaque. In 2022, she received the Terry Ann Krulwich Physician-Scientist Alumni Award at Mount Sinai, the Linda Joy Pollin Heart Health Leadership Award from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, an honorary doctoral degree from the Università della Svizzera Italiana, the Women in Cardiology Mentoring Award from the American Heart Association, and the Pulse-Setter Champion Award from the CRF. In 2023, she was honored with the Bahr Award of Excellence from the ACC. In March 2024, she received the Jacobi Medallion, the top achievement award of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
