Buena Vista University Welcomes Largest Storm Lake Undergraduate Class in a Decade

Buena Vista University has welcomed its largest Storm Lake enrollment in a decade, continuing five years of growth.

September 23, 2025

Buena Vista University (BVU) is proud to announce its largest Storm Lake student body since 2015 and its largest incoming class since 2013. Building on near-record retention percentages and five consecutive years of Storm Lake enrollment growth, this milestone highlights the university's momentum and reinforces the campus enhancements and strategic investments outlined in its ten-year strategic vision.

This growth is not limited to student numbers alone but also reflects the strength of BVU's academic programs and its growing reputation. Beyond Storm Lake undergraduates, BVU's graduate and professional programs remain in high demand. The university's established master's programs in counseling, along with newer offerings such as the Master of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Education in Educational Administration, are meeting critical workforce needs in the region and are fueling continued expansion. BVU's online undergraduate social work program has also grown quickly since its launch last fall.

"Welcoming our largest Storm Lake class in a decade is a powerful statement about BVU's momentum," said Buena Vista University President Brian A. Lenzmeier, Ph.D. "Every year, our transformational programs are preparing more students for lifelong success, strengthening our region, and ensuring BVU is building for the future."

Campus Enhancements and Strategic Investments
This fall, students moved into BVU's newly constructed apartment-style housing, further enhancing campus living options. Just last week, the university officially unveiled its new 7,500-square-foot Athletic Performance Facility, the first major achievement of the Building Champions campaign. At the unveiling, BVU announced the next phase of the campaign, designed to strengthen student-athlete experiences and enrich the overall campus community, including:

  • An expanded Al Baxter Wrestling Room
  • A renovated football locker room
  • A complete renovation of the Dennis Young Indoor Track and enhancements to the Lamberti Recreation Center.

Earlier this year, BVU announced the upcoming renovation of Grand Hall, which will feature expanded incubator and accelerator spaces for entrepreneurial ventures through the Lamberti Center for Rural Entrepreneurship, along with new facilities for the criminology and criminal justice programs. The program has recently added new tracks, including conservation law enforcement. These enhancements not only reflect BVU's commitment to academic excellence but also provide hands-on, practical experiences that prepare students for their careers. Together, these investments are designed to enrich student life while supporting future enrollment growth.

National Recognition and Student Impact
BVU's growing impact is also reflected in national rankings. U.S. News & World Report once again ranked Buena Vista University among the Best Regional Universities in the Midwest and as a Best Value among Regional Universities in the Midwest, highlighting BVU's ongoing dedication to delivering a high-quality education at an affordable price. BVU is also recognized as a Top Performer on Social Mobility, outranking all other private universities in Iowa, underscoring the university's strength in elevating students' opportunities for success.

"At BVU, we meet students where they are and elevate them to their fullest potential," added Lenzmeier. "Students are choosing BVU because they know we are focused on their success, and they see opportunity and a future here. Together, we are building community, enhancing outcomes, and transforming lives."

A Vision for the Next Decade
As BVU marks this decade-high enrollment milestone, it continues to work toward its ten-year strategic vision: to unlock every student's greatest potential to build better lives and stronger communities. With strong enrollment, new facilities, and a record of educational innovation, BVU is building momentum that will shape its next decade of success.
