The City of Vaughan is taking another meaningful step to honour and remember the victims of violence in Iran and to stand united for freedom and justice.
At the June 23 Council meeting, Mayor Steven Del Duca brought forward a Member's Resolution that was unanimously supported by Council to establish a permanent commemorative plaque recognizing those who have lost their lives during the recent mass killings in Iran.
Since late December 2025, when anti-government protests in Iran were met with widespread violence and repression, Mayor Del Duca and Members of Council have stood in solidarity with the Iranian-Canadian community. On Jan. 29, the Iranian Lion and Sun Flag was raised at Vaughan City Hall and, on Feb. 21, the City held a solemn vigil to honour the victims and reaffirm Vaughan's unwavering support for the Iranian-Canadian community.
This Member's Resolution directs City staff to work closely with members of Vaughan's Iranian-Canadian community to design and install a commemorative plaque on City property to serve as a permanent tribute to the victims and a symbol of Vaughan's ongoing commitment to human rights, freedom and solidarity. There will also be an event to unveil the plaque.
QUOTE
"The Iranian-Canadian community in Vaughan and around the world continues to carry profound grief as we remember the thousands of innocent lives lost at the hands of the Islamic Regime of Iran. We will not allow the names of these victims or their stories to be forgotten. This commemorative plaque is a lasting tribute to the brave women, men and children who stood up for their fundamental human rights and freedoms and paid the ultimate price. Vaughan stands firmly in solidarity with Iranians here at home and around the world, and I will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Iranian-Canadian community in its pursuit of democracy, freedom and justice for the people of Iran."
- Mayor Steven Del Duca
