Washington, D.C. - Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced it will impose steep tariffs on more than 80 countries around the world, under the guise of combating forced labor.
"This is a blatant attempt to revive Trump's illegal global tariffs under a different name. These latest tariffs will continue to keep inflation and prices high for Americans, and do nothing to help workers around the world," Wyden said. "Trump cannot be trusted with tariff authority. Congress should pass the bill I introduced this week to rein him in and put Congress back in the driver's seat on trade."
Trump imposed the tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, as part of a string of unpopular and unprecedented global tariffs. They replace temporary 10 percent tariffs he put in place this spring after the Supreme Court struck down his original illegal global tariffs on goods from nearly every nation on earth.
