The New York Times Rings the Opening Bell to Celebrate 175 Years

The New York Times rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange today to mark its 175th anniversary, celebrating nearly two centuries of fact-based reporting and the generations of people who have made that work possible.

At the core of The Times's long-term business success has been our investment in original, fact-based journalism. For 175 years, our reporters have gone out into the world to unearth facts that would otherwise remain unknown. That work is hard and increasingly rare, but it remains the most valuable thing we do.

Today, The Times has a bigger newsroom than at any point in our history, more subscribers than any other subscription news business in the world and an audience that is orders of magnitude larger than it was even in the heyday of print. That growth has enabled us to continue investing in our journalism and in new ways to bring that work to more people around the world.

The bell ringing comes 175 years after a group of reporters, editors, typesetters, press operators, advertising salespeople and circulation managers were preparing the very first issue of what would become The New York Times, which would hit the streets the following morning, Sept. 18, 1851.

Much has changed since then. What hasn't is the fundamental commitment at the heart of The Times: investing in the people and journalism that help people understand the world.
