Stormwater Pump Stations in Action

Stormwater Pump Stations in Action

Published on October 07, 2025

Public Works' Environmental Services and Engineering teams invite residents to a special educational event, Stormwater Pump Stations in Action, on Tuesday, October 22, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the KCKPD South Patrol Community Room, located at 2200 Metropolitan Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas 66106.

The event will feature two identical sessions beginning at 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Each will include a short presentation, a question-and-answer period, and a guided tour of a nearby stormwater pump station. Participants will be transported by shuttle from the community room to the site and back.

Stormwater and flood pump stations are key components of the city's drainage system, helping to manage runoff and reduce the risk of flooding during rain. Stormwater stations automatically activate when rainfall begins, moving stormwater away from low-lying streets, homes, and businesses. By maintaining and operating these stations around the clock, Environmental Services staff help protect public safety and ensure that roadways remain accessible during storms. Flood pump stations are next to the levee and activate when river levels reach the flood stage. The pumps are turned on to pump water up and over the levee or floodwall into the river.

"This event gives residents a chance to see how this important infrastructure works behind the scenes," said Jeff Miles, Director of Environmental Services. "Stormwater pump stations are one of the most important tools we have to protect our community in low-lying areas when it rains. Our goal is to help people understand the value of these systems and the effort it takes to keep them operating safely and efficiently year-round."

Attendees will hear directly from Environmental Services and Engineering team members about how stormwater is managed across Kansas City, Kansas, and learn what actions residents can take to help reduce flooding in their neighborhoods. The guided tour will provide an up-close look at a working pump station and the technology used to move stormwater through the system.

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
