Ranking Member Shaheen, Democratic Colleagues Condemn Trump Administration’s Historically Low Refugee Cap

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chris Coons (D-DE), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) issued the following statement condemning the Trump Administration's Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2026:

"President Trump's decision to slash refugee admissions to a historic low of 7,500-with most slots reserved for Afrikaners-undermines the very purpose of a program built to save the lives of the most vulnerable refugees worldwide. From Afghan women fleeing the Taliban, Uyghurs escaping genocide in Communist China and Sudanese escaping a civil war, the U.S. has long provided refuge to those fleeing persecution. President Trump's decision runs contrary to the long and bipartisan tradition of offering a safe haven for reasonable numbers of closely vetted refugee applicants. And the Trump Administration's failure to consult with Congress, as required by law, demonstrates its tacit acknowledgement that this decision is indefensible. President Trump's move undermines the role that America has long played in the world as a beacon of stability and a refuge for those fleeing genocide, political persecution and war crimes."
