On a cloudy morning in Boulder, City of Boulder Rangers and community members celebrated Groundhog Day with the unique tradition of looking for a top-hat wearing yellow-bellied marmot, Flatiron Freddy, and listening to his seasonal prediction. No shadow today which means we're looking for an early spring ahead.
To honor the 2026 Winter Olympics and popular sport of curling, Freddy was curled in by Rangers on snow transported from the mountains. Opening the ceremony with his signature flair, Flatiron Freddy proclaimed, "Hear ye, hear ye! I, Flatiron Freddy, the Robustest Rodent of the Rockies and the Foremost Forecaster of the Flatirons, a being of hollow head, stuffed body and marbles for eyes, do hereby present my weather prediction."
Each year, Flatiron Freddy's prediction draws crowds from across Colorado, as well as school groups and other folks from all around the U.S. that tune in to the livestream, to see how he emerges and hear his forecast. The event blends folklore, fun and science, offering a lighthearted way to connect with nature while learning about marmots and changing environmental conditions.
Freddy reflected on how changing environmental conditions are affecting marmots. Traditionally reliant on long, cold winters to hibernate, marmots are increasingly impacted by warming temperatures and shifting seasonal patterns. Rangers reminded attendees that small actions like driving less, being mindful about consumption, and reducing, reusing and recycling can help support the health of the planet and wildlife.
Beyond his seasonal outlook, Flatiron Freddy also delivered a reminder about resilience and self-care during challenging times. Rangers encouraged community members to find ways to reduce stress and stay connected by learning a new skill, reading a book, trying a new winter hike, or tuning in to the Winter Olympics.
In true Flatiron Freddy fashion, the marmot offered a bonus prediction as well, weighing in on the Super Bowl. "The Hawks are dangerous and might have me for lunch. So to me, the Patriots are the winning bunch."
Flatiron Freddy's Groundhog Day celebration continues to grow as a cherished Boulder tradition that draws national attention and brings people together with humor, heart and a shared appreciation for the natural world.
