CIS Observer Mission for Kazakhstan Parliamentary Elections to be Headed by Igor Petrishenko

The Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS Member Nations at the Statutory and other Bodies of the Commonwealth has approved the nomination of First Deputy Secretary General of the CIS Igor Petrishenko to serve as Head of the CIS Observer Mission for the election of deputies to the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Observer Mission is expected to begin its work on 3 August. A mission headquarters will be established in Astana, and meetings are scheduled with the leadership of the government bodies responsible for organizing and conducting the elections.

The elections to the Kurultai of the Republic of Kazakhstan will take place on 23 August. Citizens will elect 145 deputies to the country's new unicameral legislative body.

The Mission will also include a group of international observers representing the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS.
