How technology helped a hospitalized father be there for his son’s wedding

LOUISVILLE, Colo. - At AdventHealth hospitals across the Rocky Mountain Region, Smart Rooms are helping transform the patient experience.

From supporting more efficient discharges to enabling physicians and members of the care team to connect virtually, the technology offers meaningful clinical benefits.

But sometimes, its most powerful impact has nothing to do with a medical treatment or care plan -- it is simply helping patients be present for the moments that matter most.

For Stephanie Barry, an AdventHealth Avista gastroenterology nurse, that impact became deeply personal when her husband, Brian Barry, was hospitalized at Avista following complications from surgery in late February.

Brian Barry, a former police officer, experienced months of setbacks and complications during his recovery.

During that difficult time, his family faced the heartbreak of having him miss important milestones.

On March 5, Brian Barry was unable to attend his son's police academy graduation in person while receiving care at a Denver rehabilitation hospital.

He was able to watch the ceremony through FaceTime on his cellphone, but it was difficult to miss such a meaningful moment -- especially because he had spent many years serving as a police officer himself, and seeing his sons follow in his footsteps meant so much to him.

Then came another milestone.

On May 8, Stephanie Barry and Brian Barry's other son was married in Greeley, Colorado.

Once again, Brian Barry was unable to leave his care setting to attend. But this time, Smart Room technology gave him another way to be part of the celebration.

From his hospital room at AdventHealth Avista, he was able to virtually sit front row at the wedding, watching the ceremony on the room's television screen.

He even joined the family for part of the reception, sharing in the celebration from the comfort of his hospital room.

After months of setbacks, the experience offered a bright spot during an incredibly difficult season.

For Brian Barry, the Smart Room became more than a piece of technology -- it became a bridge to the people and moments he loved most, allowing him to participate in a milestone he otherwise would have missed.

Today, he is home and healing well. His family remains grateful for the care he received at AdventHealth Avista and for the technology that helped ensure he did not have to miss another important family moment.

Stories like his are a powerful reminder that whole-person care means caring not only for the patient's physical health but also for the relationships, memories and milestones that matter to them.

Sometimes healing looks like medicine, therapy and clinical expertise. And sometimes, it looks like helping someone sit front row at his son's wedding.
