Chaliawala publishes book examining higher education for international students

School of Public and Population Health Assistant Professor Kruti Chaliawala has published her latest book titled "Cultural Influences and International Students: Understanding Academic Experiences in US Higher Education."

Kruti Chaliawala

The book examines the challenges international students face in navigating the intricate landscape of U.S. higher education. From dissecting the nuances of grading systems to academic cultures, social relationships, language barriers and discrimination, Chaliawala combines personal anecdotes and research to shine a light on the multifaceted journey international students embark on in the U.S.

An international scholar from India who spent over 14 years navigating U.S. academic institutions, Chaliawala brings a breadth of personal experiences to the subject. Her dissertation, "Balancing Health Abroad: A Comprehensive Study of International Students' Sexual Health and Psychological Well-Being," directly informed the content of this new publication.

Chaliawala spent the last two years compiling her experiences and expertise - from the initial culture shock of landing in the U.S. to earning her Ph.D. - and integrated that lived experience with research to provide actionable, evidence-based strategies. This book uniquely focuses on the distinct barriers international female students from conservative cultural backgrounds encounter.

"I aimed to create an essential guide for faculty, advisors and administrators who genuinely want to foster culturally sensitive mentorship and inclusive environments," Chaliawala said.

Chaliawala concentrates on the role of institutional support, inclusive classroom practices and cultural competency training for faculty and staff in fostering inclusive environments for international students.

In addition to her teaching with the School of of Public and Population Health, Chaliawala has worked toward connecting with Boise State's international students from all majors and backgrounds by creating safe spaces for these students to connect with each other and peers. She also hosts a monthly Graduate Student Success Series where international students can meet to build their academic and professional development skills.

"When I share a story from my own journey and see a student realize that they are not alone and that their experience is valid, that is incredibly rewarding," Chaliawala said. "My goal is to use my expertise to turn complex, challenging cultural environments into a clear, supportive roadmap, helping them not just survive, but truly thrive and advocate for themselves."

Chaliawala hopes to engage international students through this book and her continued outreach to help them feel less isolated and more empowered.

"I am proud to tell my fellow international students that if I can do it, you can too, and you are not alone," she said.
