Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement after Republicans voted to block the House from advancing H.J. Res. 117,a Democratic effort to terminate President Trump's cost-raising tariffstargeting imports from Brazil. Coffee prices have risen by 20.9 percentcompared to the same time last year, thanks in part to these tariffs.
"Families in Connecticut and across the country are getting squeezed by high prices thanks to Trump's tariffs," said Larson. "They are a tax on you. The tariffs we voted on today have helped raise coffee prices by more than 20 percent compared to last year. Democrats came to the floor ready to end these cost-raising tariffs, but Republicans stood with Donald Trump against their constituents. No president should have this power to raise costs on you. Let's have a vote to end these tariffs now. Americans can't afford these games!"
Rep. Larson introduced the Prevent Tariff Abuse Actwith Reps. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Don Beyer (VA-08) to block presidents from unilaterally abusing emergency powers to raise prices for working families by imposing tariffs. He also introduced a billwith Rep. Linda Sanchez (CA-38) to suspend the President's tariffs and require Congress to vote before new tariffs can go into effect.
