Plumsted Township, N.J. - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized its plan to address soil contamination at the Goose Farm Superfund Site in Plumsted Township, New Jersey. The plan calls for excavating soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs) and removing chemical waste that continue to affect groundwater.
"EPA is taking the final step to finish the job at Goose Farm and is continuing to make great strides at Superfund sites across New Jersey," said EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. "This plan targets the remaining sources of contamination and delivers lasting protection for the community's groundwater."
EPA held a virtual public meetingon July 17, 2025, to present the proposed plan and hear from residents. At the request of the township, EPA extended the public comment period from August 11 to September 11, 2025. Responses to public comments are included in the final decision document, known as a Record of Decision Amendment.
The Goose Farm site, located in an agricultural area, was historically used to dispose of hazardous industrial waste. Soil and groundwater were contaminated by decades of dumping. EPA selected the original cleanup plan in 1985 and began the cleanup. The responsible party has carried out the work under EPA oversight since 1988. While much of the cleanup is complete, investigations identified remaining PCB-contaminated soil and light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) that requires additional action. The Record of Decision Amendment updates the original cleanup plan.
The final plan includes:
