How teachers and students in Miami are using AI in the classroom

In late October I visited Miami, seeing firsthand how students and educators at Southwest Miami Senior High School and Miami Dade College are using AI. From Gemini to NotebookLM to YouTube's Ask tool, these products were baked into the curriculum of classrooms and student projects, enabling new ways of interacting with course materials.

One of the teachers who I spoke with, Jessica Collazo, is reimagining how our tools can be used to help students better retain information following a recent exam. During my visit to her class, students used a class notebook on NotebookLM to review their test questions and Gemini's Guided Learning to delve deeper into why they may have gotten an answer wrong. This use of the tools allowed her the chance to move around the room and offer individual attention to more students, gaining back essential time to support her classroom.

Jessica Collazo, a teacher at Southwest Miami Senior High School, used NotebookLM and Gemini as part of her classroom's exam review process.

Another teacher, who had never coded before, used Gemini to create a trivia game for her students to play while learning. An AP English teacher created a Gemini Gem that acted as a writing assistant for her students in their argumentative essay assignment. At Miami Dade College, students have used AI skills courses to gain access to new career pathways and additional opportunities.

These examples show how essential it is for us to work with partners and base our work on learning science. We're technologists, not educators, and we recognize that the best products must be built hand-in-hand with the people who use them. This is why our work with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Miami Dade College is so essential. We're excited to work further with other schools and institutions to continue supporting students from the classroom to their careers.
