The Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE, a global nonprofit dedicated to the work of educational advancement professionals, has named 13 UCLA communications projects to its 2025 regional "best of" list.
The nonprofit's annual awards honor inspiring and creative work by staff at colleges, universities and schools throughout the world that impacts their institutions and communities.
The following projects received Best of District VII Awards:
UCLA Strategic Communications campaigns
The UCLA Strategic Communications team won four awards, including one in the magazine category for UCLA Magazine's fall 2024 issue, which also earned a national CASE gold award earlier this year. The cover story features illustrations and an oral history of Hall of Fame men's basketball coach John Wooden's final season at UCLA.
The UCLA Big Ten commercial, created in collaboration with UCLA Athletics, was recognized in the best-of video category; it earned a national CASE silver award in July.
Strategic Communications was also honored in the storytelling category for its "Welcoming UCLA's new Chancellor: Julio Frenk" campaign across several platforms, including traditional and social media, paid media and websites. UCLA's Undergraduate and Belonging website, designed to welcome prospective students to our campus, was recognized in the website/microsite category.
Geffen School of Medicine and UCLA Health
The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and UCLA Health were honored in the news and features category for their U Magazine coverage of the Amara Yad Project, which aims to render a highly controversial anatomy atlas obsolete. Earlier this year, the story won a national CASE grand gold award - the most prestigious honor given.
The medical school's digital team was recognized in the digital campaigns category for a series of SEO articles spotlighting sports medicine careers that were published during the Paris Olympics; the campaign also won a bronze award in July.
UCLA College
UCLA College was recognized in several categories. We are UCLAvian, a bird-themed online magazine that included voices from across its five divisions, was honored in the writing and digital magazine categories. It also won a national CASE bronze award in July. The stop-motion banner created for the UCLAvian story was honored in the illustrations category.
In the writing or opinion category, UCLA College won two honors: "How to save a life," a first-person column about a hummingbird rescue and a reflection on the deeper values of empathy, and "'Transformative work and compassionate character': Portrait of a true Bruin," featuring Ihab Shahawi, a UCLA alum who is giving back to the autism community.
UCLA College was also recognized in both the promotional video short and student audience video short categories for Abraca-Bruin, highlighting the UCLA magic club, and Birdbow, a student-facing digital short of bird-themed haikus and animations.
