Chair Cassidy Applauds President Trump’s Efforts to Make Health Care Affordable, Plans Further HELP Committee Action

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, applauded President Trump's recent plan to lower costs and make health care affordable for American families.

"I absolutely agree with President Trump that we must make health care affordable and give power to the patient, not more profit to insurance companies. This plan lowers the actual costs of care for all Americans," said Dr. Cassidy. "The HELP Committee has and will take action on the President's affordability agenda."

The President's plan is aligned with several Cassidy priorities to lower health care costs. Earlier this year, Trump signed U.S. Senator Jim Banks' (R-IN) legislation that Cassidy championed to bring more over-the-counter drugs to patients faster, expanding access to cheaper and effective treatments for common ailments. Cassidy is spearheading efforts to send money directly to families to purchase health care, not giant insurance companies. He is also leading the PBM Reform Act to address misaligned incentives affecting PBMs and to lower the price patients pay for their prescriptions. This legislation includes key reforms to improve transparency into PBM practices and ensure employers, not middlemen, receive rebates from drug companies.

Additionally, Cassidy plans to advance legislation through the HELP Committee to codify President Trump's price transparency rules, requiring hospitals and insurers to publicly post the prices they charge patients in a machine-readable format.
