Leader Schumer Floor Remarks On Senate Democrats’ New Report Detailing How Trump Is Exacerbating Child Care Costs And Abandoning American Families

Washington, D.C. - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke on the Senate floor blasting Donald Trump for exacerbating child care costs and refusing to use federal funds to help American families while spending taxpayer dollars on his vanity projects instead. Leader Schumer also discussed the release of Senate Democrats' new Broken Promises report on Trump's child care failures. Below are Senator Schumer's remarks, which can also be viewed here:

Today, Senators Murray, Warren, and I are releasing the most comprehensive Senate report to date on Donald Trump's broken promise to make child care more affordable.

A couple of months ago, Trump said: "don't send any money for day care, because the United States can't take care of day care… It's not possible for us to take care of day care, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things." That's what Trump said.

Really Trump? Trump thinks it's fine to stick working Americans with the bill for his gilded ballroom, his costly war in Iran, two billion dollars of slush fund payouts for him and his MAGA loyalists, and trillions of dollars of tax cuts for the wealthy, but helping families afford child care is just too much.

What a disgrace.

Trump isn't just refusing to lower costs of child care - he's actively making it more expensive and harder for families to find, and they're desperate for it.

Trump has removed caps on child care costs, frozen 2.4 billion dollars in child care funding for five states that didn't vote for him, and made numerous other changes that have driven up the cost of child care.

Is it any wonder families paying 5% more for child care now than before Trump took office in 2025 are angry? Of course they're angry.

When I was Majority Leader and Democrats were in charge, we made a historic $39 billion investment in child care that lowered child care costs by 10%, added 63,000 new child care workers, and increased the supply of available child care slots by 7%. America, that's what Democrats did when we had the majority, we helped people with child care. What does Trump do? He slashes it. And then proposes billions of dollars for a slush fund for him and his family. What callousness. What cold-heartedness. And how out of touch with the American people can Trump be?
