On 25 March, the first political consultations between Lithuania and Kenya took place in Nairobi, chaired by Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vidmantas Verbickas and Ambassador Josphat Maikara, Director-General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of Kenya.
During the consultations, the two sides discussed current issues on the bilateral and multilateral agendas, prospects for strengthening Lithuanian-Kenyan relations, the expansion of economic cooperation, directions for development cooperation, and the security situation in the broader regional context, including Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine and armed conflicts in regions neighboring Kenya.
"Lithuania considers Kenya a key partner in Africa-a country with significant economic potential, a dynamic private sector, and a clear vision for digital and economic transformation," noted Vice-Minister Verbickas.
The meeting focused particularly on opportunities to further expand development cooperation in Kenya, especially in the areas of digitalization, cyber resilience, skills development, combating disinformation, and other joint initiatives. The sides discussed ways to strengthen institutional ties and build partnerships with the business, science, and innovation ecosystems. They also discussed potential joint actions by both countries to respond more effectively to today's challenges.
During his meeting with Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of Kenya, Verbickas discussed the steps needed to ensure that the consistently strengthening ties between the two countries yield tangible results for the citizens of both nations.
The delegation from Lithuania, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Project Management Agency, and the business community, presented Lithuania's development cooperation priorities, proposed solutions, and expertise during meetings at the Kenyan Ministries of Information, Communications and Digital Economy, Education, as well as the Kenya Revenue Authority, and the Communications Authority of Kenya, presented Lithuania's development cooperation priorities, proposed solutions, expertise, and business opportunities in Lithuania.
On 24 March 2026, the Vice-Minister welcomed attendees to the closing conference of the project "Women's Entrepreneurship and Digital Literacy for Youth and Women-Led Businesses." Within the framework of this development cooperation project, implemented by the Vilnius Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Crafts (VPPAR) and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), not only were 478 small businesses directly trained (significantly exceeding the initial target), but 138 training centers were also established across all 47 counties in Kenya. A total of 551,000 euros has been allocated for seven development cooperation projects in Kenya for 2023-2026 in the areas of digitalization and capacity building for women, youth, and other vulnerable groups. In 2024, Lithuanian companies sold services to Kenya worth 10.35 million euros.
