Army Chief Scientist Visits UToledo to Explore Defense Research Partnerships

The University of Toledo welcomed Dr. David J. Gorsich, chief scientist for the U.S. Army's DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) in Warren, Michigan, on Friday for a firsthand look at the University's defense-related research capabilities, laboratories and strategic partnerships.

The visit was facilitated by Dr. Grace Bochenek, UToledo vice president for research and innovation, and included a meeting with UToledo President James Holloway, who has made regional research and innovation leadership a priority under the "Innovate Toledo" banner.

"UToledo has many areas of research strength that align with the needs of our government and industry partners," Holloway said. "Under the Innovate Toledo banner we are growing this capability, which will help us graduate students who are equipped to constantly evolve and drive the industries of the future."

While on campus, Gorsich toured a number of laboratories and research facilities and held a discussion with academic and research leaders on UToledo's research enterprise with a focus on opportunities for long-term collaboration with GVSC and other federal partners.

"UToledo brings a rare combination to the table for a partner like GVSC: deep expertise in artificial intelligence, advanced materials, power electronics and simulation, all under one roof, alongside a track record of translating research into real-world capability," Bochenek said. "Dr. Gorsich's visit made clear how closely our strengths align with the Army's priorities, and we see significant opportunity to build a lasting partnership that advances both our research enterprise and our nation's defense readiness.

The tours started with the Lloyd A. Jacobs Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center on the Health Science Campus, where Gorsich learned about UToledo's medical simulation research and digital health technologies.

From there, he surveyed research laboratories in the College of Engineering spanning artificial intelligence, power electronics, advanced manufacturing and autonomous systems.

The tours wrapped up at the Wright Center for Photovoltaics Innovation and Commercialization, home to UToledo's globally renowned work in advanced materials and energy systems.

Gorsich has served as the Army's chief scientist for ground vehicle systems since 2009, specializing in modeling and simulation. His research interests include vehicle dynamics and structural analysis, vehicle design and optimization, reliability, underbody blast analysis, terrain modeling, spatial statistics, and the accreditation and validation of simulation methods.

GVSC, headquartered in Warren, is the U.S. Armed Forces' primary research and development facility for ground vehicle technology, with focus areas spanning power and mobility, autonomous systems, force projection, survivability and protection, electronics and architecture, and cyber engineering and software integration.

As the Department of Defense's technology laboratory and engineering center of excellence for ground vehicle advancement, GVSC works closely with industry and academic partners to accelerate new capabilities for U.S. soldiers.
