PARAMARIBO, June 5, 2026 - The Government of Suriname, through the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor, today officially launched Helpline 114, the country's first national, round-the-clock mental health crisis line. Developed with the technical and financial support of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and national partners, Helpline 114 provides free, confidential, and anonymous psychological first aid to anyone in Suriname experiencing emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, or mental health crisis.
"There is no health without mental health. Today, Suriname proves that mental health support is a fundamental right, not a privilege. Helpline 114 opens a door that was long overdue, and I am proud that our Government had the vision and commitment to make it a reality," said André Misiekaba, Minister of Health, Welfare and Labor.
"This helpline is the result of months of dedicated work by our teams, our counselors, and our partners. It is designed to reach every person in Suriname, regardless of where they live or what language they speak. No one should face a crisis alone" added Dr. Raj Jadnanansing, Deputy Minister of Welfare and Labor.
PAHO/WHO provided technical assistance, essential equipment, and capacity-building support for the establishment of the helpline and will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Health and partners to enhance mental health services across the country.
Mental health challenges affect thousands of people and families every year. By creating a single national access point for support, Suriname is taking a bold step toward closing the mental health treatment gap and ensuring that help is available when it matters most. Help is only one call away.
"PAHO/WHO is proud to have provided the technical cooperation and capacity that made Helpline 114 a reality. This is partnership in action. By expanding access to timely mental health support, this initiative has the potential to save lives and strengthen the well-being of communities across Suriname," said Yafflo Ouattara, PAHO/WHO Representative in Suriname.

Mental health is everyone's business. Whether you are a parent, teacher, employer, community leader, friend, or family member, you can play a role in supporting mental well-being and saving lives. Learn the number. Share the number. Talk openly about mental health. Encourage those who may be struggling to seek help.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor, PAHO/WHO, and all partners call upon every citizen of Suriname to become an ambassador for mental well-being. Together, we can break the silence, reduce stigma, and ensure that no one faces emotional distress alone. Remember: Help is only one call away. Dial 114. Save the number. Share the number. Use the number. A single call can change or even save a life.
