In New Zealand, genetically engineered (GE) products are regulated under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO) and administered by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). In 2025, the New Zealand Government introduced a Gene Technology Bill aimed at facilitating expanded use of gene technology while ensuring strong protections for the health and safety of people and the environment. This bill has remained at the second reading stage for over a year with strong proponents and opponents.
