WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a member of the Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement on ICE's out of control operations in Minneapolis and other communities across the country, as well as a possible path forward to prevent a partial government shutdown by funding the rest of the federal government:
"ICE under Trump and Stephen Miller is out of control. Under their 'big ugly bill,' Republicans gifted ICE a $75 billion slush fund.
"It's up to Republicans to join Democrats in prioritizing law enforcement and public safety by ending these militaristic operations because, right now, ICE is trampling on people's rights, brutally enflaming conflict, and gaslighting the American people instead of telling the truth.
"From Vice President Vance's claim of "absolute immunity" to Secretary Noem calling First Amendment demonstrators "domestic terrorists," it's clear the President's mass deportation campaign is dangerously un-American. Under past administrations, both Democratic and Republican, ICE acted like a law enforcement organization. Under the chaos of Trump, we see masked agents kicking in doors, trampling people's rights, and shooting Americans in the street.
"It's imperative for these inflammatory, mass-urban-assaults to cease. It's time to restore the Constitution's protections, reform ICE, and initiate independent investigations of these shootings and raids. Republicans have a choice to make: they can listen to the American people and swiftly fund every federal agency except ICE so we can ensure there are real reforms, guardrails, and accountability; or they can keep blindly following Trump's chaos and jeopardize healthcare, defense, transportation, and education funding."
