City of Edinburg to Host Key Events During Inaugural RGV Navy Week

Edinburg, TX - The City of Edinburg will play a central role in the inaugural Rio Grande Valley Navy Week, taking place January 24-31, as the United States Navy brings more than 70 Sailors to the region for a week of public performances, educational outreach, and community service. Navy Week is a national outreach program designed to connect communities without a major naval presence to the Navy's mission and people.

Edinburg will host several signature ceremonies and performances honoring military service and local heritage. Events will also take place in Mission, McAllen, and Brownsville.

A highlight of Navy Week in Edinburg includes Sailors from the USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), named after Medal of Honor recipient and Edinburg native Sgt. Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez. Sailors will participate in memorial events honoring Sgt. Gonzalez and his family, underscoring the city's deep ties to naval history and service.

Edinburg-hosted events include:

  • Wreath Laying Ceremony at the gravesites of Sgt. Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez and his mother, Dolia., on January 26 at 9 a.m.

  • Brief Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Petty Officer, Jose Antonio "Tony" Saenz Memorial electrical lightbox, on January 26 at 1 p.m.

  • Navy Week Proclamation & Bienvenida at the Edinburg ACE Center, on January 26 at 6 p.m.

  • Navy Band and Ceremonial Guard Performance at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium, on January 27 at 6 p.m.

  • STEM Activities and Book Reading at the Edinburg Public Library, on January 29 at 6 p.m.

Residents can also enjoy performances by the Navy's Deck Plate Brass Band and the Navy Ceremonial Guard, along with educational and family-friendly activities throughout the week.

As Navy Week launches the Navy's 2026 national outreach schedule and aligns with the nationwide "Road to 250" celebration leading up to America's 250th anniversary, Edinburg is proud to serve as a host city connecting the Rio Grande Valley to the Navy's enduring mission of service, freedom, and national defense
