Enhanced bilateral cooperation with the USA


On Monday, December 15th, State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Sorin-Dan Moldovan, received at the Ministry of Defence headquarters, the visit of a delegation from the US Department of State, led by Christopher W. Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.


The meeting is part of the series of dialogue sessions recently held between the US and Romania at political-military level and reconfirms the United States' commitment to strengthening cooperative relations, in order to ensure regional and Euro-Atlantic stability and security.


During the meeting, the two officials addressed topics related to the regional security situation, the status of bilateral cooperation in the field of defence procurement, and development opportunities.


Given the new security challenges generated, in particular, by the incursions of Russian drones into the national airspace, the Romanian state secretary stressed the importance of NATO Eastern Sentry Operation for our country, which could become an essential element for ensuring stability and strengthening security in the region. In this context, the official has also emphasized the role of the MEROPS system's deployment to Romania, which will contribute to countering uncrewed aerial system that represent an efficient solution in terms of operating costs.


The Romanian state secretary also highlighted the security challenges posed to the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, emphasizing that Europe's security is interconnected with Ukraine's security and recalled the US role in strengthening Romania's deterrence and defence posture, as a security pillar in the region.
