National Community Action Network Celebrates Community Action Month This May

The Community Action Network is a strong state and local network dedicated to empowering hardworking families to achieve economic stability and long term independence. Nearly 1,000 Community Action Agencies across the country work every day to expand economic opportunity, strengthen communities, and help families build pathways to prosperity.

This year, the Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC), a proud member of the national Community Action Network, marks 62 years of serving families throughout Nashville and Davidson County.

"Each May, during National Community Action Month, we reflect on the meaningful impact that Metro Action-and our national network-has had on families in our community," said Jamekia Bies, Executive Director of MAC.

MAC supports more than 10,000 unique households each year, reaching more than 20,000 individuals through over 540,000 service engagements. These services include the Summer Food Service Program (meals), rent, mortgage and utility assistance, workforce supports, and early childhood education.

Community Action Agencies ensure families have access to the tools and opportunities they need to thrive, while also promoting local economic growth and reducing reliance on government assistance. Agencies are governed by local boards consisting of elected officials, public and private sector representatives, and engaged community residents.

"All of our programs are designed to remove barriers and create pathways to stronger social and economic mobility," Bies said. "The commitment of our board and our more than 325 MAC team members strengthens our impact and deepens our connection to the community."

To celebrate Community Action Month and raise awareness of available programs, MAC will host the 2nd MAC Community Action Day on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MAC Frederick Douglass Head Start Center-one of seven MAC preschool and childcare centers.
