Walter Jackson Elected TASA Vice President for 2026-27

At the TASA Executive Committee's regular meeting during the Midwinter Conference January 25, the committee elected La Porte ISD Superintendent Walter Jackson to serve as the 2026-27 TASA vice president. He is currently serving a 2024-2026 term on the Executive Committee as the representative for Region 4. That term ends May 31, and his service as vice president will begin June 1.

Prior to his current term, Jackson served as the Region 4 representative on the committee from 2022 to 2024 and as an at-large member from 2019 to 2021. He also previously served TASA as a member of the Advocacy and Professional Learning committees; he has been a TASA member since 2015.

In 2023, Jackson was elected to serve as one of three Texas representatives on the AASA Governing Board, with a term ending in June 2026. (Each state affiliate, including TASA, is guaranteed at least two representatives on the Governing Board.) He is also a member of the UIL Legislative Council.

Jackson, whose career in education spans 30-plus years, has served as superintendent of La Porte ISD since 2020. Before that, he was the first African American superintendent of Brenham ISD, serving the district for five years, and prior to that, he was an area superintendent for Alief ISD.

In 2019, he was named as the Region 6 Superintendent of the Year and was a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year. In 2024, the Texas School Public Relations Association honored him with its esteemed Key Communicator Award. In 2025, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus from Liberty ISD, where he graduated from high school.

Jackson holds a bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University, a Master of Education degree in Administration from Prairie View A&M University, and a doctorate in education from Baylor University. His post-graduate studies have taken him to the Harvard Graduate School of Education four times, and he has earned the university's esteemed Professional Leadership Certificate. He also holds an Advanced Management Certificate from Rice University.
