Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado Deepens Political Dialogue and Cooperation on Visit to the Republic of Korea and Japan

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs María Teresa Mercado traveled to the Republic of Korea and Japan from July 5 to 9 to deepen political dialogue and strengthen economic, trade, educational, cultural, and cooperation ties.

In Seoul, Undersecretary Mercado co-chaired the 8th Political Consultations meeting with Park Yoonjoo, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The two sides reviewed the most pressing items on the bilateral and international agenda and discussed preparations for President Lee Jae Myung's upcoming visit to Mexico.

Undersecretary Mercado also met with members of the Mexican community and thanked them for their contribution to building bridges of friendship and collaboration. She then visited the LG Science Park Innovation Gallery, where she spoke with Ambassador Ko Yun Ju, president of LG's Global Strategy Center.

She also held a working breakfast with executives from Korean companies to discuss opportunities for expanding economic and trade exchanges and investment in Mexico.

In Japan, Undersecretary Mercado co-chaired the 11th Political Consultations meeting with Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Takeshi Akahori. The two exchanged views on the state of the bilateral relationship and followed up on agreements reached during two recent phone calls: one between President Claudia Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Takaichi, and another between Foreign Secretary Velasco and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

Undersecretary Mercado also met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii and Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki to continue deepening the bilateral political dialogue. She then met with the board of Red Global MX (a network connecting Mexican professionals living abroad), Japan Chapter, highlighting the important contributions made by the Mexican community in that country.

This visit reaffirms the strength of Mexico's ties with the Republic of Korea and Japan, key allies in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Mexico's commitment to advancing joint initiatives that benefit both societies.
