Choosing the right college isn't just a decision-it's a crossroads moment, the kind that stirs up equal parts hope, nerves, and thoughts of a future that feels within reach.
Of course, finding a degree program led by accomplished faculty matters deeply; it's the first thing students look for when imagining their future. But just as important is something harder to measure: the feeling of truly belonging. Students want to step onto a campus where they're supported, seen, and encouraged-both in the classroom and out in the everyday moments that make a university feel like home.
That's what newly admitted students to the University of Houston-Clear Lake describe in sharing why they visited UHCL prior to making it their home for the next chapter of their lives.
For Javier Haywood, a transfer student from Galveston, the search wasn't only about academics, it was about connection. "The main thing I wanted to gain (from my visit) is an understanding of the campus, to see the atmosphere, and experience the culture," Haywood said. "I have been welcomed by everyone-the advisors, faculty, the (staff) team members, and the students. I like what I'm seeing so far."
That sense of being welcomed echoed for Traci Howard of Katy, who will major in education to become an elementary school teacher. "Coming here allowed me to meet faculty, my advisors, make friends, and learn more about the teaching program. Touring Hunter Hall also made the idea of living on campus feel real.
The new Hawks said they admired and appreciated UHCL's academic reputation, citing it as a key reason they applied to UHCL.
"I knew (UHCL) had a good education program for teachers in its College of Education, and I'm going to major in biological life sciences with grades 7-12 teaching certification," Charley Meadows said. "I have talked to a bunch of great faculty members with the education program who have given me insight into what to expect in the upcoming semester."
Haywood, who will major in human resources management, conveyed the same sentiment about the College of Business. "This is an amazing campus. The setting, the location … and the College of Business is accredited both nationally and worldwide (by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). I want to be a part of that."
A mechanical engineering major offered by the College of Science and Engineering attracted Steven Rubio of Houston, but he also appreciates more. "I applied to UHCL for its mechanical engineering program but not only do I want to obtain the education required for my major, I also want to experience campus life."
"The environment and the events at UHCL for people like me are things I appreciate," current Goose Creek High School student Adrian Zepeda said. "My sister came to UHCL, and she talked about the great experiences here and the amazing campus life."
Students also said UHCL's commitment to making college affordable and accessible was crucial in their decision.
Zepeda said he has a full ride scholarship to UHCL, something that is "important to take advantage of." And Howard said financial aid was important in her decision to choose UHCL: "The difference that made me apply to UHCL was that UHCL is supportive of their students, including in the scholarships they provide. That really inspired me to look into this university and see what it had to offer."
Parents also see the value of UHCL, saying they are proud that their students made the decision to apply here. Howard was accompanied by her mother, Nicole Burnley, who echoed the welcoming atmosphere of UHCL: "I enjoy the atmosphere, and I feel this will be a really good fit for Traci. I want to make sure she feels secure and safe but also that she is going to enjoy the college experience. We didn't know a lot about UH-Clear Lake so coming out to the campus was riveting."
Brumley goes even further; a first-grade teacher, she has been advancing her education to become a learning support specialist and special education teacher and plans to transfer to UHCL after completing her current program.
Because while college decisions often focus on where students can go, the deeper question is where they can see a path forward, one that connects what they want to study with what they want to do.
At UHCL, students are increasingly answering that question with confidence and clarity.
For them, choosing UHCL is not only a decision that makes sense. It is a decision they feel confident making.
