Moreno Op-ed: Trump Gave the GOP a New, Populist Soul

WASHINGTON - Today, Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) wrote a new op-ed in the Wall Street Journal laying out President Trump's bold vision to return the Republican Party back to its foundation: fighting for American workers, ushering in an American manufacturing renaissance, and putting America first.

"The Republican Party for decades stood for three core principles: lower taxes, fewer regulations and fiscal discipline, all aimed at shrinking the size and scope of government. These remain worthy objectives and will always be part of our party platform. But something was missing. The party had lost sight of the American worker. We had forgotten that our economic policies must not only reward success but also ensure that no one is left behind in pursuing it."

"President Donald J. Trump changed that. He didn't abandon the traditional Republican agenda; he expanded and completed it. He reminded us that a thriving America requires a laser focus on the people who build, make and grow things here at home. He reoriented the party toward an unapologetic defense of American labor, American manufacturing and the American Dream. In doing so, he saved the Republican Party from irrelevance and gave it a new, populist soul."

"Mr. Trump insisted that American manufacturing companies deserve a level playing field. For too long, we had watched industries become hollowed out while countries that openly seek to destroy our productive capacity flooded our markets with subsidized goods. U.S. companies can compete with any firm on earth on equal footing-but they can't compete with foreign governments that have an unfair advantage and that are determined to bury our steel mills, auto plants and factories. Mr. Trump's insight was that tariffs are the most effective, targeted tool to restore that fairness. Tariffs aren't protectionism for its own sake; they're self-reliance made policy. Products sold here should, wherever possible, be made here. That isn't nostalgia. It is national strength."

"The old Republican Party spent too much energy trying to fix other countries rather than ensuring that America thrived. Mr. Trump has ended that distraction. He has rejected the false choice between engagement abroad and neglect at home. His foreign policy isn't isolationist. On the contrary, he insists on a lethal military, stronger than anything the world has ever seen, to keep us safe. But he places the American worker at the center of every decision. No more endless wars, no more nation-building abroad while our own communities crumble. Given a choice between sending money to help foreign countries or sending that money to help American cities, the decision has been easy. America First isn't merely a slogan. It's the only moral and practical foundation for policy."

[…]

"This reimagined GOP would have welcomed traditional Democratic politicians who spoke about the working-class voters who once formed the backbone of their party. Today's Democrats, however, fit a different mold. The Democratic Party has been radicalized. It has become the party of social extremism, wide-open borders and a massive government that increasingly resembles classic socialism. When voters are given a choice between an America First, pro-worker Republican Party and the Democratic alternative, Republicans will win every time. That's why Mr. Trump won in 2024."

"That's also why I left the private sector and ran for the U.S. Senate. I work every day to ensure that this transition to a new, populist Republican Party endures. Mr. Trump has ignited a political movement and realigned our Party with the aspirations of the American people. The proof is in the factory towns that are stirring back to life, the families who can once again plan for their futures and the working men and women who finally feel that one of our two major parties is on their side."

"The Republican Party is stronger, more unified and more relevant today than it has been in a generation because Mr. Trump reminded us what the GOP was always supposed to be about: America, its workers and the dream that still defines us."
