Journalism students seeking academic credit and hands-on experience are encouraged to apply for a student reporting internship with the O'Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism.
Student interns collaborate with professional journalists selected for nine-month O'Brien Fellowships, contributing to in-depth reporting or multimedia projects that expose injustice, uncover hidden truths and create meaningful impact in communities.
During the 2026-27 academic year, interns will earn three credits per semester toward advanced journalism or capstone requirements. Eligible applicants must be incoming juniors, seniors or graduate students.
O'Brien interns are treated as entry-level professionals and are expected to meet high standards. Responsibilities may include research, data collection, analysis, writing, interviewing and multimedia production.
At the conclusion of the internship, students may have the opportunity to participate in a Marquette-sponsored summer internship at their fellow's home newsroom.
Each year, the program awards four fellowships, with each fellow paired with one or two student interns. Fellows for the upcoming academic year have not yet been named. Interns work an average of six hours per week, with flexible schedules coordinated with their fellows.
The internships are competitive. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 27.
Applicants must also submit a resume, personal statement, work samples and references. Reference letters are not required.
Interviews will be conducted by O'Brien Director Jeffrey Gerritt. Selected interns will be notified in April and will begin work in the fall semester.
