Arthur Scarritt and Michael Kreiter from Boise State's Department of Sociology and the Syringa State Community Research Lab spoke to Boise State Public Radio's George Prentice about their recent research. Scarritt and Kreiter, along with McAllister Hall from the Idaho Policy Institute, presented their report about the impact of Boise School District's free breakfast program.
The researchers found that free breakfast improved a variety of performance metrics for students participating in the program. Students were more engaged, tardy rates were lower and test scores increased among economically disadvantaged students.
"[Parents] really saw it as transformative," Scarritt said. "This was enormously successful in so many different demographics and so many different ways."
This research demonstrates the importance of food security and its immediate impact on educational opportunity and academic achievement.
