Taxpayers Meeting in Freeburg
This week, I joined the community for a taxpayers meeting at Freeburg Area Library District to provide legislative updates and answer questions. It was great to see constituents attend and have open discussions about how they feel about current policies.
Like the rest of the state, a lot of taxpayers are fed up with having more money pulled from their pockets to foot the bill for bad policies coming out of Springfield.
We must do more to help Illinois residents keep more money in their pockets. I'm focused on lowering the cost of living by supporting legislation that will help alleviate some of the rising costs we are seeing across the state!
How Much Longer Will Governor Pritzker Lie About His Record On Affordability?
This week, Governor JB Pritzker once again claimed he is fighting to lower taxes for working and middle-class families. After years of high taxes and fees, Illinois families know that claim simply is not true.
A prime example is from last year when Democrats in the Illinois General Assembly passed the largest budget in state history, totaling more than $55 billion and including roughly $700 million in new taxes.
According to the Illinois Policy Institute, Illinois is now taking $1,434 more in taxes from each resident than before Governor Pritzker took office. We also can't forget about the 49 tax hikes that governor Pritzker has passed since 2019.

State Rep. Kevin Schmidt is Hosting Valentine's for Veterans Card Drive in the 114th District
Representative Schmidt is encouraging students and residents of all ages to make Valentine cards with a special thank you, including well-wishes to veterans that served our nation in the U.S. Armed Forces.
"I believe the small things we do for the men and women who served our country makes a big difference in their lives," said Schmidt. "The purpose of my Valentine's for Veterans card drive is to let them know our community supports them and appreciates their sacrifices made to protect our freedoms. A simple card or drawing will bring a smile to someone's face, and that is the goal we are working on together to achieve this Valentine's Day in the 114th District."
All ages are invited to create a Valentine's card or drawing. Cards should be delivered to Rep. Schmidt's office by mail or in person, located at 4041 Mississippi Avenue in Cahokia Heights no later than February 12, 2026. Schmidt Supports Bill That Lowers Car Insurance Rates
Monthly bills play a huge part in affordability in Illinois. Insurance rates have increased significantly the past couple of years which is why I support my colleague's effort to reduce auto insurance rates for Illinois families.
I'm co-sponsor on HB4548- the bill contains language changes and reforms to current state law that would help bring down premiums for motorists in Illinois.
"We must do more to help Illinois residents keep more money in their pockets," said Schmidt. I'm focused on lowering the cost of living and this bill will help alleviate some of the rising costs we are seeing across the state."
