HELP Committee Advances Bipartisan Bill Led by Senator Hassan to Improve Cybersecurity for Rural Hospitals

WASHINGTON - The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee voted to advance four bills supported by U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, including a bill led by Senators Hassan and Josh Hawley (R-MO) that will help strengthen cybersecurity for rural hospitals. The Rural Hospital Cybersecurity Enhancement Act requires the Department of Health and Human Services to develop a strategy to help safeguard rural hospitals against cyberattacks, including through staff trainings.

"Rural hospitals are a lifeline for people across New Hampshire, and it is crucial that these hospitals are prepared for modern security threats," said Senator Hassan. "I'm glad to see my bipartisan bill to improve cybersecurity for rural hospitals advance, and I urge my colleagues to pass this bill so that we can keep our care safe and secure."

The HELP Committee also passed Tyler's Law, a bipartisan bill introduced by Senators Jim Banks (R-IN) and Alex Padilla (D-CA) and cosponsored by Senator Hassan that helps implement fentanyl testing as a standard practice in the case of a likely overdose. Legislation cosponsored by Senator Hassan to help prevent future infant formula shortages also advanced.

Senator Hassan is working to support rural hospitals through several pieces of bipartisan legislation. She introduced the bipartisan Rural Hospital Flexibility Act, which provides rural hospitals with critical funding to support training, technical support, and equipment to better serve patients. Senator Hassan also leads bipartisan legislation to support rural health care facilities in providing urgent obstetric care.
