City of Amsterdam contributes to the development of local hydrogen network H2avennet

Alderman Zita Pels (Sustainability, Energy Transition and Circular Economy) commented on the contribution to H2avennet:
"With a hydrogen network, we can make real progress in reducing CO₂ emissions. We hope that the national government will also take its responsibility. For a successful hydrogen economy, support for the production, import and use of hydrogen is needed, as well as the timely realisation of a national hydrogen network with large-scale storage."

Public hydrogen distribution network

H2avennet is a public hydrogen distribution network for the Port of Amsterdam area, developed by Firan (a subsidiary of Alliander) in collaboration with Port of Amsterdam. The network will provide companies in the port area with access to sustainable hydrogen and enable the connection of hydrogen production, import and use. As such, H2avennet forms a crucial link in the energy infrastructure required for the decarbonisation of industry, mobility and logistics in the Port of Amsterdam area.

Connection to national hydrogen networks

H2avennet will be constructed as a local, low-pressure network operating between 8 and 16 bar. It is designed in such a way that it can later be connected to the national hydrogen transmission network currently being developed by Hynetwork Services.

Firan is currently working on the detailed design, which is expected to be completed in 2026. This includes a connection between the Port of Amsterdam on the southern side of the North Sea Canal and the HoogTij industrial estate in the municipality of Zaanstad. Following completion of the detailed design, Firan intends to take an investment decision.

Future-proof hydrogen network as an essential prerequisite

Hydrogen plays an important role on the path towards a climate-neutral port and city. A future-proof hydrogen network is an essential prerequisite for stimulating the hydrogen economy in the Port of Amsterdam area. We therefore aim to anticipate market developments through the development of H2avennet.

Gert-Jan Nieuwenhuizen, Executive Director New Business at Port of Amsterdam:
"Leadership and direction from government are indispensable in this transition. We are therefore very pleased with the contribution from the City of Amsterdam's Climate and Energy Fund to H2avennet, which gives a significant boost to the development of the local hydrogen network."

The hydrogen network is expected to become operational from 2028.
