Community Members Sought for New Central Library Public Art Committee

Burbank, CA (October 16, 2026) - The City of Burbank is seeking community members interested in helping shape the public art vision for the future Burbank Central Library and Public Plaza. Applications are now being accepted for the New Central Library Public Art Committee, which will help guide the selection and placement of public art as part of the future Library and Public Plaza located in downtown Burbank, attracting 25 million visitors annually.

The future Central Library and Public Plaza is envisioned as a transformative space that will bring together a new library, City office space, public plaza and open space, and a parking structure. The approximately 97,500-square-foot library and City office building is expected to include modern spaces supporting education, workforce development, technology access, cultural programming, collaboration, and learning, along with approximately 43,000 square feet of outdoor public space.

"Public art has the ability to transform a building or public space into something that feels uniquely connected to its community," said Burbank Library Services Director Eric Lashley. "We're looking for community members who can bring a range of perspectives and experiences to this process and help us envision public art that will welcome, inspire, and connect generations of Burbank residents."

Committee members will work with the project's architectural firm and City staff to help determine appropriate types and locations of public art, recommend a tiered approach to public art budgeting, assist with developing the Call for Art and eligibility requirements, and review and score eligible artist applications.

The City welcomes applicants with experience, knowledge, or interest in arts and culture, public art, architecture, urban design, project management, community engagement, civic leadership, design review, budget oversight, or related fields. Community members with a strong interest in the future of Burbank and the role of public art in creating welcoming civic spaces are encouraged to apply.

Committee members are expected to serve for approximately 28 months. The Committee is anticipated to begin meeting in January 2027. Construction is anticipated to begin in Summer 2027, with the Call for Art anticipated in Fall 2028 and the new Library anticipated to open in Spring 2029.

Public art opportunities are expected to include a variety of disciplines, including photography, printmaking, painting, fiber art, ceramics, murals, mosaics, sculpture, assemblage, kid-friendly play sculptures, and digital art.
