Washington, D.C. - Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) recently delivered keynote remarks at America's Credit Unions' 2026 Congressional Caucus, underscoring the importance of credit unions. Drawing on his own experience, Chairman Scott highlighted credit unions' role in expanding access to homeownership, small business opportunities, and the American Dream. He also discussed modernizing board rules, ensuring credit unions benefit from financial innovation, and keeping their members' voices at the forefront of the Committee's work.

On his personal experience with credit unions:

"I was a poor kid in a single-parent household that found my way to the American Dream. And I think part of it was because I experienced walking into a credit union and understanding that I wasn't a number. That I was actually just Tim. That I had a name that mattered to the folks that were working with me. And I learned financial literacy along the way."

On modernizing credit union board rules:

"I have experienced the good that comes out of the credit unions. … I included in there modernizing the board rules because I understand the importance of doing so."

On ensuring credit unions benefit from financial innovation:

"Let's make sure that our credit unions across the country have an opportunity to experience the benefit of all the latest iterations that are going to happen in the marketplace. I want to make sure the credit unions are at the front of the table sitting there having a conversation with the Banking Committee and the folks in power, so to speak, so that we make sure that we do the right thing."

On listening to credit union members:

"When your members communicate effectively to you, and you communicate effectively to us, then we are able to keep moving forward the mission of the credit unions."

On public service and credit union volunteers:

"We in Washington need to remember we work for you. … And most of the people who elected us cannot afford a lobbyist to come to Washington to fight for them. What they need are passionate, dedicated volunteers to show up and, as we say at home, show out so that we, the elected officials, hear from people representing the greatest country on the planet. But we stay that way with your help."
