Is PPL Stock Really Expensive

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

PPL (PPL) stock trades at 22.2 times its adjusted earnings over the four quarters ended June 30, 2026, a profit figure that adds stock-based pay, after tax, to normalized net income. The valuation looks full on a trailing basis, but the picture shifts when weighed against the profit expected over the next two years. So, are you overpaying for PPL stock at today's price?

Partly: What PPL Stock Costs On Expected Profit

The answer is partly. At the November 3, 2026 close, PPL stock trades at 18.5 times the consensus forecast for its fiscal 2026 earnings. That multiple drops to 17.0 times earnings on the fiscal 2027 forecast, compared to the 22.2 times investors pay for earnings over the four quarters ended June 30, 2026. Two different profit measures, rather than underlying growth, may account for part of this gap. The fiscal 2026 forecast sits inside management's range for ongoing earnings, while the trailing figure starts from normalized net income. PPL looks expensive on the profit it has already earned, and the price on the profit still to come is fair only if that profit arrives.

What Does PPL Have To Earn For That Price?

PPL has to grow its profit faster than its sales. The consensus forecast puts fiscal 2026 net income at $1.45 billion on revenue of $9.7 billion. Those figures imply a 15.0% net margin, compared to the 13.1% PPL reported for fiscal 2025, making the wider margin an assumption rather than an achieved result. The measure itself may account for part of that gap. In the second quarter of 2026, PPL reported earnings of $0.30 per share, compared to ongoing earnings of $0.33.

Sales growth presents a lower hurdle. The consensus forecast models a 6.0% revenue increase in fiscal 2027, slightly below the 6.7% growth PPL delivered over the four quarters ended June 30, 2026.

The company's own guidance aligns closely with the fiscal 2026 consensus. On August 7, 2026, PPL reaffirmed its ongoing earnings forecast of $1.90 to $1.98 per share for fiscal 2026, a range that includes the consensus estimate of $1.95. Management expects stronger earnings in the second half of 2026 from rate case outcomes in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. The rate case settlement in Pennsylvania alone provides a $275 million approved increase, effective July 1, 2026.

Where Could PPL's Profit Forecast Fall Short?

The net margin remains the most likely source for a shortfall. The consensus forecast requires a 15.4% net margin in fiscal 2027, a level that also sits above what PPL reported for fiscal 2025. On the fiscal Q2 2026 call, management said higher operating costs, depreciation and interest expense offset higher retail rates in Kentucky, leaving that segment's results flat. Lower sales volumes, due to less favorable weather than a year earlier, also weighed on Kentucky. Higher depreciation and interest expense also pushed Pennsylvania's results lower.

PPL is on pace to invest about $5 billion in 2026, and it completed its financing needs for 2026 through debt offerings in the second quarter. If interest and depreciation continue to grow faster than the new rates add, the margin would come in narrower, bringing the forecast profit down with it.

Earnings growth in fiscal 2027 offers a second area of risk. The consensus forecast anticipates earnings per share of $2.12 for fiscal 2027, compared to $1.95 for fiscal 2026. That implies growth of about 8.7%, exceeding the 6% to 8% a year management targets through at least 2029, though management expects growth near the top of that range. Earnings growth that stays inside management's range would pull the fiscal 2027 forecast down. Additionally, management does not expect material earnings through 2030 from its Invitium joint venture with Blackstone.

If the forecast profit arrives, the forward multiples provide a fair picture of what you pay for PPL. The margin represents the most likely place for a shortfall, and if it falls short, the stock is a riskier bet, priced for profit PPL has not yet earned. PPL's net margin and its earnings per share are the figures to watch when the company next reports, expected in November 2026.
