KOKOMO, Ind. - A fun day of golf translated into support for Indiana University Kokomo's student athletes.
Heather Hayes, IU Kokomo's athletic director, said the Kokomo Country Club (KCC) hosted the Kingston Classic Golf Tournament this spring to support athletic scholarships. Eleven teams - comprised of four golfers plus a member of the Cougar men's or women's golf team or the baseball team - competed in the event.
Hayes noted that Jay Biggs, KCC general manager, helped to secure event sponsorship from Rex Gingerich, founder and CEO of Chariot Automotive Group.
"This event was incredibly meaningful for IU Kokomo athletics, and most importantly, for our student athletes," Hayes said, adding that they are grateful to all involved.
"From the kickoff celebration to the outing itself, every detail reflected the passion this community has for our student athletes and their success," she said. "The support shown through this event will have a direct impact on scholarship opportunities and the overall experience of our athletes."
The outing was a multiday event, starting with a kickoff party at McGonigal Buick GMC for all participating teams, their families, colleagues, friends, and the entire IUK athletic department. It included music from the Time Travelers, food, drinks, and games.
The golf outing began with lunch at the Kokomo Country Club, followed by a round of golf and dinner.
Winning teams received free golf outings for themselves or their businesses. KCC also auctioned off a year's worth of advertising on IUK Athletics video and LED boards for the 2026-2027 year, which raised additional scholarship funds.
"This event was so meaningful and impactful to our campus, athletic department, and most importantly, our student athletes," said Alexa Roberts, assistant athletic director for operation and compliance/senior women's leader.
"Being able to partner with Jay, Rex, Chariot/McGonigal, and KCC was such an honor, and we hope this is just the beginning of a great partnership moving forward."
Education is KEY at Indiana University Kokomo.
