Twenty-five middle school students from across Allegany County recently spent three days discovering science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) during Frostburg State University's F2T2 Camp, held June 15-17, 2026.

Now in its eighth year, the camp is directed by Dr. Sarah O'Neal, Associate Professor in Frostburg State's Department of Educational Professions. Designed to introduce students to college life and a wide range of career possibilities, the camp provides engaging, hands-on learning experiences led by University faculty, staff, alumni, and community volunteers.

The camp was made possible through an Opportunity Grant from the Frostburg State University Foundation, which supports innovative educational experiences that connect young learners with the University and its academic programs.

This year's camp welcomed 25 students, including 14 returning campers. The strong number of returning participants reflects the positive experiences students have had over the years and the program's continued popularity among local families.

Throughout the three-day experience, campers participated in activities hosted by several academic departments, including Health & Wellness Education, Recreation & Parks Management, Wildlife & Fisheries, and Geography. Students engaged in team-building activities and yard games, dissected fish, flew drones, and learned about the diverse educational and career opportunities available through each discipline.

One of the camp's defining features is its interdisciplinary approach. Each year, different academic departments participate, allowing students to explore a broad spectrum of interests and potential career paths. In previous years, campers have interacted with faculty and participated in activities in Theatre & Dance, Nursing, Emerging Media, Biology, and other academic programs across campus.

In addition to exploring academic disciplines, students completed daily STEAM projects designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Activities included creating animal-themed mosaics, assembling wire maze game kits, and building climbing robots.

The camp was supported by a dedicated team of 10 Frostburg State University alumni, including four retired teachers who volunteered their time and expertise to help create a meaningful and engaging experience for participants.

Beyond the hands-on activities, F2T2 Camp gave students an opportunity to experience life on a university campus and interact with positive role models from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. End-of-camp surveys underscored the program's impact, with every camper reporting that they could envision themselves attending Frostburg State University in the future.

"F2T2 Camp provides students with opportunities to explore potential career paths, engage in hands-on learning experiences, and experience life on a college campus," said O'Neal. "We want students to leave campus feeling excited about their future and knowing that college is a place where they belong. One of our goals is to help students begin envisioning themselves as future college students while building confidence, curiosity, and connections with Frostburg State University." O'Neal continued, "It was especially rewarding to see that every camper indicated they would like to become a Frostburg State University student in the future. That tells us these experiences are making a meaningful impact."

Programs such as F2T2 reflect Frostburg State University's commitment to educational outreach and community engagement. By introducing young learners to new ideas, skills, and career possibilities, the camp helps students begin envisioning their futures while strengthening connections between the University and the schools and families it serves throughout the region.
