Safety tips and reminders shared ahead of the potential for heavy rains

September 30, 2026

Heavy rainfall could impact the Norman area this week. Follow the National Weather Service for the latest forecast information. Residents are also encouraged to review the following safety tips and recommendations:

  • Clear the Drain for Rain: Clearing inlets around your home or neighborhood lets rain water flow more efficiently into the storm drain system and can aid in flood prevention. When we clear trash and debris from these inlets, we also help protect our drinking water since this drainage makes its way back into the streams and creeks that empty into Lake Thunderbird.
  • Stay especially weather aware if you are traveling:
    • Be aware of potentially flooded roads or low-lying areas. Never drive into standing water.
    • Do not enter moving water. Even shallow, fast-moving water can be dangerous.
    • Leave barricades in place. Even if the water has receded, barricades may be there for a reason.
  • Stay prepared: Read up on safety tips and guidance should there be flooding events at ready.gov.
  • Report damage: Storm-related flooding and property damage can be reported at Normanok.gov/form/flood-damage-form.
