Joshua Scheff earns Northern Maine Community College’s highest student honor

Joshua Scheff, a Network Administration and Cybersecurity student, has been named NMCC's 2026 Student of the Year.

Joshua Scheff, a student in Northern Maine Community College's Network Administration and Cybersecurity program, has been named Student of the Year in recognition of his academic excellence, leadership and service to the campus community.

Each year, one student from each of Maine's seven community colleges is selected for the honor and recognized at a statewide event celebrating student achievement.

Scheff's selection was supported by nominations from across the college, including academic and administrative departments and numerous faculty and staff members. This level of campuswide recognition is uncommon and reflects his wide-ranging impact at NMCC.

Originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, Scheff came to Aroostook County to pursue advanced cybersecurity training at Loring Job Corps. Drawn to the region's strong sense of community and mutual support, he chose to continue his education at Northern Maine Community College.

At NMCC, Scheff serves as president of the college's Alpha Phi Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In that role, he has led service projects, coordinated fundraising efforts and supported initiatives recognizing student achievement. He also works as a tutor in the Academic Resource Center and as a lab assistant within his program, contributing to both student success and campus engagement.

Scheff said developing balance between academic responsibilities and personal well-being has been one of his most significant areas of growth. Through improved time management and a commitment to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, he has continued to excel as both a student and a leader.

Following graduation, Scheff plans to pursue a career in cybersecurity while continuing his education through advanced certifications or a higher degree.

He expressed gratitude to Network Administration and Cybersecurity faculty member Reuben Caron and student support career specialist Cassie Rogeski for their mentorship and encouragement, along with appreciation for the broader NMCC community.

"Being named Student of the Year is like a pat on the back from your dad after winning your first game," Scheff said. "It is the A-plus for passing the math quiz. It is the reminder that I am on the right path, that people see me and appreciate the effort I have to offer."
