The Marxe School's First Doctoral Cohort Leads Through Service from Day One

During new student orientation, members of the inaugural EdD-HEA cohort volunteered at Medgar Evers College, putting leadership through service into action from the start.

The inaugural cohort of the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs' Executive Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration (EdD-HEA) program recently partnered with the Transition Academy at Medgar Evers College to support a pop-up pantry event where volunteers distributed fresh produce, pantry staples, and second-hand clothing to the community.
Dr. Waleek Boone, director of the Transition Academy at Medgar Evers College, led the community service and took students on a tour of the Transition Academy's broader facilities - providing insight into their operations and mission of helping students overcome barriers to academic success by addressing food insecurity, housing instability, and other fundamental needs.
This unique collaboration between CUNY campuses supported the doctoral program's goal of developing practitioner-scholars who respond thoughtfully and effectively to complex challenges in post-secondary education. The EdD-HEA program embedded the service project into a dynamic, three-day new student orientation. From the start, the inaugural cohort has been introduced to opportunities to collaborate and directly engage with the values that define the program, including the Marxe School's longstanding commitment to service.
A 54-credit online program, the EdD-HEA stands as the first doctoral degree offered by the Marxe School, Baruch College's first doctoral degree in education, and the first doctoral program in higher education administration offered by The City University of New York. The EdD-HEA program will continue to partner with the Transition Academy at Medgar Evers College for next year's new student orientation and looks forward to future opportunities for cross-campus collaboration as it prepares equity-driven leaders who will champion innovation and student success across diverse educational settings.
